BRYANBOY BLOGGERS BRUNCH

by Talya posted September 2, 2011 category EVENTS, SUNGLASSES

Just got back from the most incredible morning at the BryanBoy Bloggers Brunch..

The Cape Town leg of the Sunglass Hut & Marie Claire bloggers brunch was held at the Asian-inspired Tjing Tjing rooftop bar, read about the Johannesburg event on Miss Milli B’s blog here. It’s the strangest thing, having read BryanBoy’s blog for years and following him on Twitter to then actually meeting him in person, and surpassing all of my expectations. He was so down-to-earth, witty and extremely insightful.

It was an intimate gathering with fellow bloggers including Dylan Jack of Just Dylan Jack, Marco of Man of The Cloth, Alex of Cape Town Girl, Aqeelah of Fashion Breed, Robyn of Style Guide Cape Town and Chloe of Coco The Blog.We had a little Q & A session in which we learnt that – his favourite cities are Stockholm, Hong Kong & New York, he hates LA cos ‘it’s all smoke and mirrors.’ He doesn’t have a style icon, although there are women that he admires there is no-one that he ‘worships’ – the person who comes closest is Anna Wintour. His favourite Vogue at the moment is the American version, he thinks the French is ‘the most commercial’ of them all. He also told us all about his jetsetting lifestyle.. After a whirlwind tour of South Africa, he will fly home to the Philippines – where he lives with his mom when he is in town, before jetting off to New York on the 6th of September, two days before fashion week begins. After that, of course it’s onto London, Milan & Paris, oh the life of a famous blogger!

Someone asked him about Rumi of Fashion Toast whom he is often photographed with, and surprisingly he said that she was in fact quite a private, reserved person and that she was the girl version of him. Another fact; he only likes two celebrity fashion lines, they are Victoria Beckham’s, and Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen’s The Row.

It was also extremely interesting to learn that he doesn’t see himself as a fashion-blogger per se, there are street-style bloggers such as Tommy Ton and Scott Schulman as well as personal-style bloggers such as Andy Torres and Sussie Bubble, but he sees himself as a personal blogger, sharing the things and places he sees and loves. He also said he doesn’t see himself as a brand, nor as a blogger that is using his blog as a platform for other business ventures. He has no intentions of doing a clothing line or fragrance anytime soon, although his voice did trail off after he said: ‘Maybe I’ll do a book..’ Loved what Marie Claire editor Aspasia Karras had to say: ‘Blogging is like doing your memoirs in real time.’

In terms of the fight between fashion editors who have ‘been working their asses off for 20 years’ and bloggers who are automatically (sometimes) given front-row tickets to the best show, he thinks it has all been totally blown out of proportion by the media, and that he does in fact occasionally sit in the second or third row – shock horror!

Marc Jacobs named a bag after BB after he made a video entitled: ‘Leave Marc Jacobs Alone’ defending the designer from critics who complained that his show’s always start so late. He was amongst the first bloggers ever to sit front-row at a fashion show, Dolce & Gabbana S/S 2009 to be exact. He has gotten to travel the world, meet so many new and creative people, gets sent the most incredible clothes and accessories – and yet astonishingly besides from the whole wearing huge sunglasses inside vibe, had no airs and graces about him. ’My mom was saying the other day – my life a collection of 15 minute moments!

Here is my favourite quote from the morning: ‘There is something so addictive in trying to get people to react.’

P.S. I live Tweeted the event for Sunglass Hut, so check out their Tweetstream whilst it’s still fresh.

P.S.S. Yes I am aware that the last photo is extremely blurry, but he was taking a photo of me, so I had to take one back :)
